Butte Commissioners finally approve ramp for Uptown business following prolonged battle

After months of tireless advocacy, a Butte businesswoman has finally received permission to build an access ramp to the front of her business. Jamie Decker, the owner of Top Deck Medical Aesthetics and Wellness, fought for this ramp with determination and perseverance, refusing to give up until she achieved her goal.

In June 2023, Decker began working to secure an ADA access ramp for her business on Granite Street. However, her initial requests were denied due to right-of-way encroachment on the city-owned sidewalk and liability concerns. Despite these obstacles, Decker continued to advocate for her cause, gathering support and attending City Council meetings to make her case.

At the April 17 Council of Commissioners meeting, Decker was accompanied by dozens of supporters who spoke passionately about the importance of equal accessibility for all individuals. Their impassioned testimonies resonated with the commissioners and ultimately led to the approval of the access ramp permit. The display of strength and grace from the supporters left a lasting impact on many of the commissioners.

Supporters wore T-shirts bearing the message “The Future is Accessible,” emphasizing that accessibility is crucial for everyone’s future. They highlighted how initiatives like Decker’s access ramp will help people with disabilities gain greater independence and participate more fully in society.

People with disabilities expressed frustration at being excluded due to a lack of accessibility but also shared their positive experiences with other businesses that have made similar accommodations. Through their powerful testimonies, they shed light on how important it is for businesses like Top Deck Medical Aesthetics and Wellness to prioritize accessibility and provide equal opportunities for everyone. By amplifying their voices, Decker was able to bring attention to this important issue and create a more inclusive community for everyone.
