Raw food consumption leading to pig streptococcus infection

A 42-year-old man from Hai Phong recently received medical attention for symptoms of a dull headache, fever, and hearing loss due to Streptococcus suis infection. Despite a normal brain scan, lumbar puncture testing confirmed the presence of the swine streptococcus bacteria in his system.

The patient had a history of consuming raw and undercooked pork, including fermented pork rolls. Doctors at the Department of Tropical Diseases at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital explained that the infection was likely due to his dietary habits. In addition to fever and headache, he experienced hearing loss in his left ear, which can be a long-term complication of meningitis caused by swine streptococcus.

Meningitis associated with swine streptococcus can lead to severe complications such as muscle spasms, altered consciousness, irritability, coma, tremors, and skin issues. Hearing loss is a common complication that significantly impacts the quality of life of affected individuals. To prevent such infections, doctors recommend consuming only properly cooked pork, avoiding undercooked or raw meat, and practicing good hygiene when handling and preparing food.

It is crucial to ensure that meat purchased is inspected by veterinary authorities and has a clear origin. Additionally, signs of spoilage should be carefully checked before consumption. By following these guidelines and avoiding risky food practices like eating raw or undercooked meat products, individuals can reduce their risk of contracting dangerous bacterial infections like Streptococcus suis.

The case highlights the importance of responsible consumption habits when it comes to food safety. It also serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless foods can have serious health consequences if not handled properly. Therefore, it is essential to be vigilant about what we eat and take necessary precautions to protect our health from potential threats like bacterial infections caused by contaminated meat products.
