Anonymous Claims to Have Hacked the IDF and Obtained a Quarter of a Million Documents

In recent news, the Ministry of Justice has been hacked by Anonymous and over 8 million data files totaling 300 gigabytes were obtained. This includes personal details of those on the lists. Some members of Anonymous, active since 2003, have threatened to continue “destroying the Zionists.” The National Cyber System has warned against an expected wave of attacks in the wake of Ramadan and increasing hostility towards Israel and its online presence.

The fear is that hackers will launch attacks on websites, digital systems, leak sensitive documents, steal personal information, implant surveillance software and hack into computer systems. The public in Israel has been advised to be cautious when clicking on suspicious links and report any suspected attacks. This comes amidst various online content related to slot games, online gambling, and certification verifications among other topics.

Security officials in the IDF estimate that the chance of a breach is low to zero, but it is possible that this could be “psychological warfare” by the hackers. The IDF’s computer system is completely closed and classified at different levels of severity. If there was indeed a hack, it is unlikely that the IDF computers were breached but it is possible that information was collected from files on civilian computers against orders.
