In recent news, U.S. health officials have issued a warning about counterfeit Botox injections that have affected more than 20 individuals. These injections were administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals in settings such as homes or spas, and most of the affected individuals got the injections for cosmetic reasons.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that half of these individuals have required hospitalization due to serious illness linked to these counterfeit injections. The CDC stated that six people have been treated for suspected botulism, a serious illness caused by botulinum toxin entering the bloodstream. Symptoms of botulism include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing.
Health officials emphasized the importance of receiving injections only from licensed professionals and reporting any suspected counterfeit products to prevent further harm. This warning comes after the CDC alerted doctors about this issue on Tuesday, with cases of illness linked to these counterfeit injections beginning in early November and being reported in 11 states.
