Protecting Vietnamese agricultural products abroad ensures good sales prices

The geographical indication (GI) registrations in Vietnam have seen a rapid increase in recent years, with over 50 agricultural products successfully registered abroad. This has led to price increases of 15-25% for these products. One such product is lychee, which has received GI protection in the Japanese market. This has allowed the family of Mr. Vu Van Men in Bac Giang to sell their clean lychees at a higher price, leading to an increase of 15-25%.

To meet the criteria for GI protection in Japan, luc ngan lychees must follow strict technical requirements from seedlings to harvesting and preservation. The Bac Giang Department of Industry and Trade estimates that exports of luc ngan lychees to Japan will increase from 201 tons in 2021 to 500 tons by 2024.

The National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP) has seen a rapid increase in GI registrations in Vietnam, with a focus on specific products through the development of GIs. Protecting intellectual property rights is crucial for Vietnamese businesses expanding abroad, but registering trademarks and GIs can be a complex and time-consuming process.

Vietnam has signed international treaties on intellectual property and cooperation projects with partners to support businesses in protecting their intellectual property rights in foreign markets. State management agencies are actively supporting businesses through seminars, training, and awareness-raising activities to build export strategies and develop product brands abroad.

The protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights are not only important for businesses but also for localities and industry associations in Vietnam. The role of Vietnam’s representative agencies abroad is crucial in providing timely information on market risks, policy changes, and intellectual property laws in foreign countries.
