Complications of menstrual cramps caused by uterine fibroids

Nhung, a 42-year-old woman, had been struggling with menstrual disorders for years. Upon visiting the doctor, she was diagnosed with large uterine fibroids causing complications with her menstrual bleeding. Nhung had given birth to her second child 10 years ago and had not undergone a gynecological examination since then. Since then, her menstrual cycle had lengthened and she experienced heavy menstrual flow. Recently, the heavy menstruation had made her fatigued, prompting her to seek medical help at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

On May 2, BS.CKII Lam Hoang Duy from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center at the hospital diagnosed Nhung with vaginal bleeding and a significantly enlarged uterus. The uterine fibroid was measured at 8×6 cm, and her hemoglobin levels were dangerously low. After receiving a blood transfusion and stabilizing her condition, Nhung underwent surgery to remove the fibroids. The procedure was successful, and Nhung recovered well over the following days.

Nhung admitted that she had only visited a healthcare provider for gynecological exams during her pregnancies and had been hesitant to seek medical attention for her menstrual irregularities. Dr. Duy noted that uterine fibroids are common in women of reproductive age and can cause serious health issues if left untreated. Regular gynecological exams are important for early detection and management of conditions like uterine fibroids.

Dr. Duy emphasized the importance of seeking medical help for symptoms like abnormal vaginal bleeding or prolonged menstruation. Early detection can lead to better outcomes and a higher likelihood of preserving the uterus. Women should prioritize their reproductive health and visit their healthcare provider regularly for check-ups and screenings to ensure overall well-being.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop on the walls of the uterus or between them during childbearing years
