The U.S. National Science Foundation addresses UTEP’s aerospace grant suspension

On April 25, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) instructed the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to pause work on the Regional Innovation Engine and Aerospace Center pending a review. This decision was made after the NSF became aware of a potential issue with the NSF Regional Innovation Engine and referred it to their Office of Inspector General for further investigation. No NSF funding will be allocated to this NSF Engine until the review is complete.

UTEP admitted that they discovered potentially incorrect statements in their proposal to the National Science Foundation for the Regional Innovation Engine Program on April 6. Upon further examination, they realized that some of the claims committed resources to the NSF grant that UTEP does not have. On May 6, UTEP sent a letter to the NSF informing them of these errors in their proposal.

ABC-7 reached out to UTEP for additional comments and information regarding this matter, but there has been no response from the university yet. KVIA ABC 7 urges civil and respectful conversation on its platforms and provides Community Guidelines for reference. They also invite individuals who wish to share their story ideas through their submission process.
