UNRWA leader warns against agency dissolution: Millions of Palestinians at risk of losing refugee status

In a recent meeting at the UN Security Council, Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini of the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) strongly condemned any attempt to dissolve his organization. He warned that such a move would lead to millions of Palestinians losing their refugee status and worsening the already dire situation in Gaza.

Lazzarini emphasized the importance of UNRWA’s work in providing essential humanitarian aid to residents of Gaza, particularly children who are at risk of being denied education if the agency is shut down. He stated that closing UNRWA would condemn an entire generation to despair and potentially perpetuate violence.

The meeting was initiated by Jordan and began with a moment of silence in memory of the 178 UNRWA employees who lost their lives in Gaza. Despite Israel’s accusations against UNRWA for complicity in Hamas’s crimes, they acknowledge that it is the only agency with the necessary infrastructure and personnel to provide critical aid to Gaza residents.

The debate about the future of UNRWA remains a contentious issue with far-reaching implications for both the Palestinian refugee population and the region as a whole. It is crucial that international leaders continue to support this vital organization in its efforts to provide assistance and promote peace in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions.
