Joint bid by US and Mexico for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup withdrawn.

The US Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Federation have announced their decision to withdraw their joint bid for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. They have stated that they will instead focus on a bid for the 2031 edition of the tournament with the goal of equal investment as the Men’s tournament, in order to maximize its commercial potential.

As a result of this withdrawal, only two bids remain to host the 2027 tournament – one from Brazil and a joint bid from Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany. The winning bid will be announced at the upcoming FIFA Congress in May.

Cindy Parlow Cone, President of US Soccer, stated that hosting a World Cup is a massive undertaking and additional time to prepare will maximize its impact globally. She added that this shift in bidding plans will enable a record-breaking Women’s World Cup in 2031 to help grow and raise the level of women’s football both domestically and internationally.

Despite this change in bidding plans, there will still be an incredibly busy calendar of international soccer competition in the United States over the next few years. In 2025, we’ll host the FIFA Club World Cup; in 2026 we’ll co-host with Mexico and Canada for FIFA Men’s World Cup; and then Los Angeles will play host to summer Olympics in 2028.

Ivar Sisniega, president of Mexican Football Federation expressed his confidence that with their experience gained from co-hosting men’s World Cup in 2026, they would be able to provide excellent infrastructure and enthusiastic fan base for Women’s World Cup in 2031 contributing to continued growth of women’s football.
