US and Mexico retract joint bid for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosting duties

The US Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Federation have decided to withdraw their bid for hosting the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Instead, they will focus on bidding for the 2031 tournament, aiming to equal investment as the Men’s tournament to maximize its commercial potential.

The announcement of the winning bid for the 2027 tournament will be made at the 74th FIFA Congress in May. Currently, there are two remaining bids – one from Brazilian Football Confederation and a joint bid from Royal Belgian Football Association, Royal Netherlands Football Association, and German Football Association.

Cindy Parlow Cone, President of US Soccer, emphasized the importance of hosting a World Cup tournament. She highlighted how it could positively impact global audiences with meticulous preparation. The decision to shift the bid to 2031 aims to provide an equitable experience for players, fans, and stakeholders while contributing significantly to women’s soccer’s growth worldwide.

Despite this change in plans, the US still has an extensive calendar of international soccer competitions in store for fans in coming years. It will host the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, co-hosts with Mexico and Canada for FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2026 (which takes place between June 14th and July 18th), and Los Angeles hosts Summer Olympics in 2028. Mexican Football Federation president Ivar Sisniega highlighted that they gained valuable experience from co-hosting men’s World Cup in 2026 and are confident they can provide quality infrastructure and enthusiastic fan base for a successful event that would contribute positively to women’s football development globally.
