UK government will share digital mapping technology with Canada

The UK and Ontario, Canada have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to share knowledge and technology related to creating digital maps of underground infrastructure. This partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of information and technological expertise regarding the UK’s National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), a geospatial mapping project that stores data on the location of underground pipes and cables.

The MoU was signed by Viscount Camrose, Minister for Intellectual Property in the UK, and Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure in the Government of Ontario. Viscount Camrose expressed his satisfaction with Ontario’s recognition of the Geospatial Commission’s work in developing the NUAR and its potential benefits for Ontario’s infrastructure and economy. The agreement highlights the strong relationship between the UK and Ontario and underscores the UK’s expertise in the geospatial sector.

Surma, Ontario’s minister of infrastructure, emphasized the historic partnership between Ontario and the UK in sharing knowledge and experience in the infrastructure sector. The collaboration aims to leverage the Geospatial Commission’s expertise to accelerate infrastructure projects in Ontario and address the evolving needs of growing communities.

Through this agreement, Infrastructure Ontario will gain access to best practices and technology from Britain’s Geospatial Commission. The goal is to enhance worker safety, reduce asset strikes, improve accuracy of geospatial infrastructure data, which will ultimately drive innovation, support modern infrastructure development.
