CREW Files Criminal Complaint Against Trump for Chicago Business Deal

The FBI and Department of Justice have received a complaint from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington accusing President Donald Trump of intentionally making false statements about debts owed to his Chicago business on his public financial disclosure reports.

The Trump Organization, between 2015 and 2023, informed the public that it owed over $50,000,000 to its Chicago business, which it certified as true, complete and correct. However, a court-appointed monitor has revealed that this loan never existed. This false claim could suggest a tax avoidance scheme or a hidden debt to another party.

Noah Bookbinder, the President of CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington), stated that while Trump has a history of lying about his finances, lying on a government disclosure is potentially a violation of criminal law. Public financial disclosures are intended to demonstrate the integrity of high-level government officials and build public trust in the federal government free from conflicts of interest. If Trump knowingly falsified his disclosures, he would have violated the public trust these laws were meant to uphold.

Bookbinder emphasized that no one is above the law and that everyone must follow the same rules in the executive branch. He urged the FBI and DOJ to investigate further for potential legal action.
