Mets send Mark Vientos down to Triple-A to clear spot for Starling Marte

Mark Vientos was optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse two days after hitting a walk-off homer for the Mets against the St. Louis Cardinals. The move was made to create room on the 26-man roster for Starling Marte, who was activated from the bereavement list. Despite understanding that it was likely a temporary measure, Vientos expressed his willingness to seize opportunities and work hard to make the most of them.

Although DJ Stewart and J.D. Martinez are currently on the roster, Vientos may not have a clear role at present due to Joey Wendle being the only backup middle infielder on the team. A potential swap of Wendle for Vientos is unlikely, as he has shown promise in Triple-A and could be considered an alternative replacement if Wendle is eventually parted with in the future. However, given his defensive limitations at third base, Vientos faces challenges in finding a place in the Mets’ lineup, despite having been considered for their DH job earlier this season.

Despite facing difficult circumstances, Vientos remains focused on working hard and making his mark in New York City. He has performed well in Triple-A over the past two seasons and could be considered if Brett Baty struggles at bat later on this season. Regardless of what happens next for him, Vientos will continue to put in the effort required to succeed at every level of play.
