Tragic Accident Leaves Howard University Professor and Student Dead; Dean Encourages Seeking Professional Help for Grief

Howard University School of Business professor Dr. Kamal Agarwal, 72, was involved in a fatal car crash earlier this month in front of Cook Hall, according to the School of Business. Agarwal was driving at a high rate of speed on 6th Street NW and Fairmont when he failed to negotiate a left turn, striking Howard freshman Mohamed Samura.

Tragically, Samura, 18, died from his injuries on April 15. Agarwal, who declined to comment on the incident due to his health, is currently recovering at home. Despite the lack of a statement from Agarwal, School of Business Dean Dr. Anthony Wilbon expressed distress over Samura’s passing and offered full support to those affected by the tragedy.

Following the car crash and Samura’s death, meetings were held with Samura’s business orientation team and close friends as well as School of Business faculty and staff. Wilbon encouraged everyone impacted to seek professional help in their time of grief.

Agarwal is a professor in the Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences at Howard University where he has been teaching for 23 years. His university profile indicates that he specializes in information systems, network and internet security, and related areas. The Howard University Office of Communications has not provided any information on whether Agarwal will return to teaching after his recovery or if there will be changes to traffic signage near Cook Hall.

An MPD investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing and a lawyer representing Samura’s family also confirmed that the investigation is still underway.
