APD Calls for Unity in Fight Against Property Crimes Affecting Albany Businesses

Albany Police Department (APD) is calling on local business owners to unite in the fight against a surge of property crimes that have affected several Albany businesses. In the first three months of 2024, there have already been 21 reported burglaries at various Albany businesses. A recent incident involved a smash-and-grab at a Dollar General store on Radium Springs Road, where the suspect stole chips and drinks, leaving behind significant damage.

The community is expressing disappointment over these incidents, with customers like Bertha Thomas lamenting the inconvenience caused by the theft. Business owners, such as Sudha Patel of Quick Buys Food Stores, are facing financial burdens due to the damages inflicted by these criminals. Patel’s store has been targeted twice in the last three months, adding to her frustration and financial strain.

Lt. Jon Segroves, who oversees APD’s property crime unit, has emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to protect businesses from thefts. He advised business owners to use resources like the FUSUS system and make their establishments less attractive to potential burglars by limiting the value of items left inside stores. By doing so, Segroves believes they can deter further criminal activity and reduce the number of property crimes in Albany.

The community is encouraged to report any suspicious activity they observe to local law enforcement agencies. By staying vigilant and taking proactive steps, businesses can better protect themselves from property crimes and ensure their safety and security for years to come.
