The Importance of Lab Designers Understanding the Needs of Scientists

As lab designers, our main focus is to understand the needs of lab scientists, who are the end-users of the spaces we design. To achieve this, we continuously expand our communication channels with scientists. At SMMA, we approach this in two main ways: by gaining more insights into the scientific work conducted in the spaces we design and by engaging in educational programs.

These educational programs are organized by esteemed scientific organizations like I2SL, My Green Lab, NEBSA, Lab Design Conference, Lab Manager, and Harvard School of Public Health. By participating in these programs, multiple stakeholders are able to share their expertise on various topics related to lab design and planning.

Learning about the science conducted in labs provides lab designers with a competitive edge for several reasons. It helps bridge the communication gap between architects and scientists, which is crucial in modern lab design projects that involve numerous variables and priorities. By understanding the day-to-day challenges scientists face in the lab, designers can create spaces that are more functional, user-friendly, and safer.

Expanding our knowledge of science also allows for fresh perspectives and innovative design approaches. This enhanced understanding helps in finding alternative, sustainable design solutions that align with the end goal of achieving net zero energy and carbon neutrality in lab projects. Educational initiatives like My Green Lab’s Ambassador Program further support our expertise in designing safe and sustainable buildings.
