Elderly Ukrainian woman, 98, walks 10 kilometers in slippers and with walking stick to flee Russians

In the eastern Ukrainian region, Lidia Stepanivna Lomikovska’s village was targeted by the Russians. At 98 years old, Lomikovska made the brave decision to flee from the Russian-occupied territory. With nothing but her slippers and a walking stick, she managed to cover almost ten kilometers on foot in one day. The fighting in Ocheretyne, right on the front line, had intensified, prompting her and her family to flee after two years of war. Unfortunately, in the chaos of their departure, Lomikovska became separated from her son and two daughters-in-law.

Determined not to give up hope of being reunited with her loved ones, Lomikovska continued her journey alone for an entire day without food or water. But she refused to let anything stand in her way. She walked with a walking stick in one hand and a piece of wood in the other until she finally reached the Ukrainian lines. It was then that Ukrainian soldiers noticed her walking along a road at night and turned her over to the White Angels, a police force that evacuates civilians on the front lines.

Lomikovska was then transferred to a shelter where she was finally able to be reunited with her family members. Despite everything she had gone through during those long days on the run, Lomikovska remained determined and resilient. And as if that wasn’t enough good news for this incredible woman who had survived World War II and now this ongoing conflict in Ukraine – Monobank announced that they would purchase a house for her so that she could spend her golden years comfortably surrounded by love and safety.
