How Americans perceive technology companies

In recent years, there has been a growing concern among Americans about the impact of social media on politics and the country, with Democrats expressing particular worries. A new survey from the Pew Research Center sheds light on this issue, revealing that most Americans are concerned about social media’s role in politics and its effects on the nation. The research also highlights that Republicans stand out on various measures, with a majority believing that major technology companies display bias towards liberals.

The survey focused on three main areas: Social media’s impact on politics and the country, Political censorship and bias in Big Tech, and Government regulation of technology companies. Since 2020, there has been a notable increase in the number of Americans who believe that social media companies have too much political power. The survey conducted among 10,133 U.S. adults in February 2024 revealed that roughly 78% of Americans feel that these companies have too much power and influence in politics, up from 72% in 2020. Only 16% believe that social media companies have the right amount of political influence, while a mere 4% believe they do not have enough power.

One of the most striking findings of the survey is how Democrats are becoming increasingly worried about the power held by social media companies. This concern is reflected in their greater belief that these companies exert too much political influence over society. On the other hand, Republicans are more likely to perceive bias towards liberals in major technology companies, which could lead to further polarization and division within American society.

As these concerns continue to grow, it remains to be seen how they will shape the future of social media and technology regulation in the United States. Will policymakers take action to address these issues? Or will they allow social media companies to continue their dominance unchecked? Only time will tell how this story unfolds.

Overall, it is clear that Americans are increasingly concerned about social media’s role in politics and its impact on society as a whole. With Democrats showing a particular uptick in these worries, it is important for policymakers to address these concerns head-on if they want to maintain public trust in technology platforms and ensure a more equitable future for all citizens.
