Eden Golan’s Eurovision prep: Keeping her vocal cords hydrated

The lungs are not only crucial for breathing, but they also play a significant role in projecting a strong voice. This is explained by Prof. Benny Negris, director of the otolaryngology department at the Meir Medical Center of the Klalit Group. He emphasizes that the strength and function of the lungs are essential for vocal projection.

However, singers may experience swelling of their vocal cords due to strain and overexertion from intense rehearsals or performances. In such cases, some singers use inhaler devices to introduce medications or steroids to reduce swelling and improve voice quality. It’s important to note that young singers like Eden are unlikely to have underlying lung problems and may only use such devices with substances like water or saline solution.

Voice training exercises are also essential for maintaining vocal health. Prof. Negris mentions how vocal training has benefited cantors who perform for long hours without amplification. Eden, being a professional singer, likely engages in such vocal exercises before rehearsals to ensure optimal performance.

Before a big performance, Dr. Slovik recommends that Eden drink plenty of water, avoid smoking, and stay in humid areas to keep her throat moist. Sucking on sour candies can stimulate saliva production, maintaining hydration in the throat and preventing vocal strain during performances.
