Numerous youth require hip replacements

The number of people with hip disease at Tam Anh General Hospital has increased by over 48% in the past 6 months compared to the same period last year, with over 500 cases. Among these, about 70% are under 40 years old. According to MSc.BSc.CKI Le Dinh Khoa, Head of Joint Reconstruction Department, Orthopedics Trauma Center, this trend is a significant shift from previous years when hip diseases were more common in individuals aged 50 or older.

Factors such as lack of exercise, alcohol abuse, and smoking have contributed to this change. Hip dysplasia, hip degenerative arthritis, and femoral head necrosis are some common hip diseases that cause severe pain and limit daily activities, leading to disability in some cases. Timely treatment is crucial for these conditions to avoid complications like skeletal deformities and limping.

Minimally invasive joint replacement techniques have emerged as an effective solution for young patients who require surgery. These techniques allow patients to resume physical activities post-surgery and avoid limitations observed in traditional surgical methods. The main goals of hip replacement surgery for young patients are to restore hip function, increase the durability of the artificial joint, preserve maximum bone for potential future surgeries, and facilitate quick recovery.

Dr. Khoa emphasizes the importance of early detection and intervention for hip diseases. Prompt treatment can alleviate pain, improve mobility, and slow disease progression. For patients requiring surgery, seeking treatment at reputable medical facilities with specialized doctors and advanced equipment is recommended to ensure effective treatment and a quicker recovery process.

Rehabilitation exercises post-surgery play a vital role in strengthening soft tissues surrounding the joint, enhancing joint function, and increasing joint durability.

In summary, the rise in hip disease cases among young people at Tam Anh General Hospital is a significant shift from previous years when these conditions were more common in older individuals. Lack of exercise, alcohol abuse, and smoking have contributed to this change. Minimally invasive joint replacement techniques offer an effective solution for young patients requiring surgery. Early detection and intervention are crucial for timely treatment that can alleviate pain and improve mobility while preserving maximum bone for potential future surgeries.
