The Deepest Blue Hole in Chetumal Bay: A Unique Wonder on Earth

In 2023, a team of scientists from the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies, and its Public Center El Colegio de la Frontera Sur made a groundbreaking discovery in Chetumal Bay, Quintana Roo. They identified the Taam ja’ blue hole as the deepest of its kind in the world, measuring 420 meters below sea level. The team used the Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) profiler instrument to understand the characteristics of the water column inside the blue hole.

The Taam ja’ blue hole has a morphology similar to that of a cenote and is completely submerged with brackish or marine characteristics. The measurements revealed significant variations in temperature and salinity, different water layers, and transition zones. The characteristics of the water suggest that there may be underground connections between the bay and the Caribbean Sea through the hole.
