Sacramento Wastewater Project to Utilize FuelCell Energy Technology

The Sacramento Area Sewer District (Sacramento Sewer) is set to convert on-site biofuel into clean electricity with the help of FuelCell Energy’s carbonate fuel cell technology. This biogeneration project, developed by Ameresco, will utilize one of FuelCell Energy’s 2.8-Megawatt carbonate fuel cell platforms.

FuelCell Energy has also entered into an agreement to offer comprehensive maintenance services for the system, allowing Sacramento Sewer to focus on its core mission of safeguarding public health and the environment while benefiting from renewable power generated by the latest clean technology available.

The use of FuelCell Energy’s technology results in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants, benefiting the local community. Jason Few, FuelCell Energy’s CEO & president, stated that their patented power platforms offer a unique advantage by running on on-site biogas without combustion. This enables community facilities like SacSewer to efficiently produce clean and continuous electricity while reducing operating costs.

FuelCell Energy has been operating in California since 2005 and has collaborated with various government entities to provide clean energy solutions through innovative platforms. Previous successful installations leveraging biogas technology include projects in Riverside, San Bernardino, and Tulare. The company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship continues to drive partnerships with communities seeking to reduce their dependence on traditional grid energy sources.
