Rockies’ ninth-inning collapse makes MLB history for the wrong reasons

The Colorado Rockies faced a daunting challenge during their recent game, as they struggled to avoid allowing five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to hold on and now hold an unenviable record. The Rockies have trailed for at least part of all 29 games played this season, breaking a tie with the 1910 St. Louis Browns for the longest such streak in history.

Despite a promising first-inning rally that scored five runs, the Rockies couldn’t maintain their lead in the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers back in September 2023. Starting pitcher Elehuris Montero had a strong showing, pitching eight innings of shutout baseball. However, relief pitcher Justin Lawrence struggled, allowing a flurry of hits and runs that resulted in the game being pushed to extra innings. Ultimately, a double and single in the tenth inning sealed the Rockies’ fate.

The loss still counts against them despite technically never trailing during the game. The team’s disappointing season in 2023 and lackluster offseason set expectations low for them but the rough start to the season has been even more challenging than anticipated.
