Report condemns sharp rise in global anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism is on the rise around the world, particularly in countries with significant Jewish populations. A new report released by Tel Aviv University, in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), highlights this global trend. Data collected from official sources, Jewish organizations, and media platforms shows a rapid increase in anti-Semitic incidents since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East.

In the United States, there were approximately 3,500 incidents reported between January and September 2023, with nearly 4,000 in the last three months of the year. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years. In France and Germany, there were also notable spikes in anti-Semitic incidents during this period. The report warns that if anti-Semitic persecution continues, it will jeopardize the ability of Jewish people to live normal lives in safety and freedom.

The rise in bomb threats against synagogues and Jewish institutions was particularly alarming, with 962 threats in 2023 compared to 94 in 2022. Most anti-Semitic incidents involved harassment of Jews, with 5,256 reported in 2023 compared to 2,717 in 2019. Cases of vandalism also increased from 1,888 in 2019 to 3,497 in 2018. Assault reports totaled only two incidents in Australia during this period compared to six assaults recorded last year.

The report attributes some of this increase to social media amplification following the October attack by Hamas on Israel’s Gaza Strip border crossing. However, it also notes an increase in anti-Semitic speech across the Arab world.

Overall, this report serves as a stark warning about the dangers facing Jewish communities worldwide and highlights a need for greater awareness and action against hate crimes.
