Gazans dismiss Hamas’ celebrations of Rantisi’s death on social media as they have more pressing issues

On October 23, 1947, Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi was born in Yavneh, south of Tel Aviv. He grew up with 11 siblings and his family fled to the Gaza Strip in 1948. After completing his education and becoming a certified pediatrician, al-Rantisi became involved in politics in Gaza.

In 1987, he played a significant role in the founding of the Islamic movement Hamas. He became a leader in the organization and advocated for the uncompromising struggle against Israel throughout his life. Despite facing multiple incarcerations by Israeli and Palestinian authorities due to his involvement in Hamas and outspoken views against collaboration with Israel, he remained committed to his cause.

Al-Rantisi continued to advocate for militant actions within Hamas even when under house arrest at times. In 2003, he refused to negotiate with the Palestinian Authority government following Sheikh Yassin’s death. His death marked the end of his leadership within Hamas and left a significant void in the organization.

On April 17, Hamas commemorates the 20th anniversary of al-Rantisi’s death through publications on its websites and social media platforms instead of public events due to ongoing war initiated by Hamas in October 2023 that continues for the 194th day, keeping residents preoccupied and unable to focus on remembering him properly.

Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi was a political figure who fought for Palestine’s liberation from Israel until his assassination later that year. His legacy continues to inspire many Palestinians as they continue their struggle against occupation and oppression.

Hamas remembers Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi on April 17 by marking the anniversary through publications on its websites and social media platforms instead of public events due to ongoing war initiated by Hamas that continues for almost two years now.

Although no public events are scheduled to commemorate this occasion, it is crucial for us all to remember Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi’s contributions towards Palestine’s freedom struggle despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life.
