Soldiers’ bodies exchanged between Kyiv and Russia

Russian and Ukrainian forces exchanged bodies once again in the ongoing war between the two countries. On Friday, Kiev received 121 bodies from fighting in the Luhansk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhia regions, as announced by the Ukrainian coordination staff for prisoner of war issues. The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the return. Meanwhile, Russia received 29 casualties, as announced by MP Shamsail Saraliyev in Moscow.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for over two years now. Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion with all its might, with President Volodymyr Zelensky revealing in February that 31,000 soldiers had been killed. Western estimates suggest Ukrainian losses may be even higher, with experts indicating that deaths on both sides are likely more than double the official figures.

Despite the ongoing hostilities, these prisoner exchanges have remained one of the few points of contact between the warring neighbors. The last exchange of casualties took place on March 15th, with Ukraine receiving 100 bodies and Russia receiving 69 soldiers killed. Negotiations over the exchange of dead and prisoners have continued to maintain communication between the two parties.

Various entities like the International Committee of the Red Cross have also played a role in facilitating returns of casualties in this ongoing conflict.
