Automakers require additional charging stations

A recent report from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) sheds light on a concerning disparity between the current availability of public charging points for electric vehicles in the EU and the amount needed to meet the continent’s CO2 reduction targets. According to the report, between 2017 and 2023, sales of electric cars in the EU increased three times faster than the installation of charging points. ACEA estimates that by 2030, the EU will require eight times more charging points annually to meet its targets.

In light of these findings, ACEA’s general director, Sigrid de Vries, emphasized the importance of widespread public charging infrastructure to achieve Europe’s ambitious CO2 reduction goals. Despite ongoing efforts, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of infrastructure development in line with the rising adoption of electric vehicles. The European Commission suggests that 3.5 million charging points need to be installed by 2030, far surpassing the current installation rate.

Last year, just over 150,000 public charging points were installed across the EU, averaging less than 3,000 per week. In comparison, ACEA estimates that approximately 8.8 million charging points will be needed by 2030, requiring a significant increase in installation rates. De Vries stressed the urgent need for increased investments in public charging infrastructure to bridge the gap and achieve climate objectives.
