Pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrested outside NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology

On Tuesday night, a group of pro-Palestinian activists gathered outside the Fashion Institute of Technology in Chelsea, New York. The demonstration started in Union Square where hundreds of people called for an end to the conflict in Gaza. As they marched through the city streets, causing traffic disruptions, a few individuals were arrested by the police.

After leaving Union Square, the protesters moved to FIT, where they set up an encampment. The exact number of arrests made during this demonstration is yet to be determined. Chopper 2’s Dan Rice reported on the scene and observed part of the encampment being taken down. Celeste Faison, executive director of Movement for Black Lives, commented on the growth of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in New York due to recent developments in the conflict and images from college campuses.

Faison emphasized that protests are crucial in disrupting the status quo and raising awareness about repression. Layan Fuleihan, a protest organizer, echoed this sentiment by stating that coming together can be powerful in effecting change. Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams announced a reward of $5,000 for information on vandals who defaced a World War I statue on the Upper East Side, believed to be connected to the pro-Palestinian demonstrators who disrupted the Met Gala recently.

During the Met Gala earlier this week, more than two dozen people were arrested for clashing with police, burning the American flag and rushing barricades. The protests continue to highlight ongoing tensions and political pressures surrounding the conflict in the Middle East.

The protesters gathered outside New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) on Tuesday night as part of a larger movement calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine and demanding accountability for human rights violations committed by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian civilians.
