Seven people dead, including two minors, in Ecuador massacre

In Ecuador, a town near Guayaquil experienced a tragic armed attack on Friday night that resulted in the deaths of seven people, including two minors. Police reports on Saturday confirmed the deaths of seven male citizens without vital signs, all with multiple gunshot wounds in Nobol, Guayas province. Among the deceased were two identified as minors and two with criminal records.

The massacre took place in Nobol, located about 42 kilometers from Guayaquil, a city known for its high crime rates and ties to drug trafficking cartels. According to local media sources citing police officials, the motive behind the massacre is believed to be revenge. The violence has become more frequent in Ecuador due to its location as a transit point for drug trafficking due to its ports on the Pacific.

Ecuador’s homicide rate has increased significantly in recent years, reaching a record of 43 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023. President Daniel Noboa declared the nation to be in a state of internal armed conflict following a violent attack by criminal gangs that resulted in twenty deaths in January. The tragic incident highlights the growing challenges facing Ecuador in terms of security and crime prevention.

The country’s strategic location between major cocaine producers Colombia and Peru poses significant risks, making it a target for drug trafficking activities. Authorities continue to work towards addressing these issues and improving safety for all residents.
