IndyStar sports columnist Gregg Doyel will not cover Indiana Fever, according to IndyStar spokesperson speaking to CNN.

Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark will not have IndyStar sports columnist Gregg Doyel covering her team this season, as the paper has announced that Doyel will not be assigned to the Fever. The decision comes after an uncomfortable interaction between Doyel and Clark during her introductory news conference in April.

During the news conference, Doyel made a heart gesture with his hands towards Clark, which she often did during her college basketball career. When Clark asked if he liked it, Doyel responded, “I like that you’re here,” and suggested she start doing it to him for them to get along. Doyel later apologized for his comments, acknowledging that they were inappropriate and awkward.

Gannett, the parent company of the IndyStar, did not respond to inquiries about whether Doyel would cover the Fever at all this season. When contacted by CNN, Doyel did not comment on the situation. His last published article was on the Indianapolis Colts’ NFL draft in late April. Meanwhile, Clark and the Indiana Fever are set to start their 25th regular season next Tuesday on the road against the Connecticut Sun.
