LGBTQ+ businesses in NJ receive certification through state law

Dr. Chris Awwad, the Director of LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness Center at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, discussed the importance of providing specialized care for the LGBTQ+ community. The center aims to address the unique health and wellness needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in a safe and inclusive environment.

On Wednesday, Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law that establishes a process for certifying LGBTQ+-owned businesses in New Jersey. This legislation builds upon an existing executive order signed earlier this year, providing LGBTQ+ businesses with access to local contracting opportunities and state agency initiatives. The move is seen as a positive step towards promoting diversity and inclusion in the business community.

Gus Penaranda, Executive Director of the NJ Pride Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the significance of the new law in sending a welcoming message to businesses looking to invest in New Jersey. By codifying the certification program in statute, the state ensures that LGBTQ+-owned businesses will have continued support and recognition for years to come.

To be eligible for certification, businesses must be majority-owned by LGBTQ+ individuals who are actively involved in the management of the company. The goal of the legislation is to encourage LGBTQ+ businesses to establish roots in New Jersey and contribute to the state’s economy. With an estimated 1.4 million LGBTQ+-owned businesses in the US, the economic impact of these businesses is significant and deserves recognition and support.
