2024 NFL Draft Grades: Washington Commanders excel, but Jayden Daniels is crucial for success

The Commanders are entering a new era with the addition of a promising quarterback, impact defenders and an athletic prospect on the offensive line. The selection of Jayden Daniels as the second overall pick ahead of Drake Maye was not universally loved, but it is expected to be a significant improvement over last season’s quarterback, Sam Howell. Despite his frame and lack of elite passing traits, Daniels still has potential with his rushing ability and deep ball accuracy.

Jer’Zhan Newton, the defensive tackle from Illinois chosen 36th overall, is a fan favorite for the Commanders. Newton’s foot injury has raised concerns about his ability to stay healthy, but if he can overcome this challenge, he is predicted to make a strong impact for the team. Newton is considered one of the most polished interior pass rushers in this year’s draft class and will benefit from playing alongside established players like Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. This selection provides a promising outlook for the Commanders.

The success of this draft class largely depends on Daniels becoming a top-tier starter, but they did manage to acquire some solid players in the draft, which should give fans hope following a less-than-stellar free agency period. The team also added depth and talent to their roster through other picks such as Mike Sainristil, Ben Sinnott, Brandon Coleman, Luke McCaffrey, Jordan Magee, Dominique Hampton and Javontae Jean-Baptiste.
