Prien, the deputy leader of CDU, considers the possibility of forming an alliance with Wagenknecht

The upcoming state elections in Brandenburg, Thuringia, and Saxony pose a complex challenge, particularly in Thuringia where the AfD is leading in the polls. The CDU is currently in discussions regarding potential partners for the upcoming elections, with a focus on the challenges of coalition formation in East Germany.

CDU federal vice-president Karin Prien has not ruled out collaboration with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance (BSW) after the three East German state elections. She emphasized the importance of assessing the BSW’s candidates and political goals before deciding on potential collaboration. On the other hand, CDU Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) has called for a more open approach to cooperation with the Left Party but made it clear that the CDU would not seek a coalition with them.

Prien reiterated that the CDU’s exclusion of cooperation with the Left Party and AfD remains in effect. She emphasized that while there may be differences between parties, it is important to prioritize democracy and stability above all else. Günther also highlighted that despite their differences with other parties, he believes that collaboration can still be possible if certain criteria are met.

While these discussions continue, it is unclear how many majorities will be formed in each state or if they will even form any government at all. However, one thing is certain: East Germany’s political landscape remains uncertain as these elections draw near.
