Falling down stairs results in collapsed lung and 7 broken ribs

Mr. Van, a 62-year-old man, fell down the stairs from a height of 3 meters and suffered severe injuries. He sustained a fracture of his rib cage, pleural effusion, and a high risk of infection. After being treated at Kien Giang Provincial Hospital for several days, it was determined that the pleural fluid in his chest had significantly increased, causing compression and partial collapse of his lung.

To address this issue, the doctor placed a pleural drain in Mr. Van’s chest to drain air, fluid, blood or pleural pus. However, despite this procedure, his lungs were still not expanding properly after five days. As a result, he was transferred to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment.

At Tam Anh General Hospital, Dr. Tran Quoc Hoai from the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery performed surgery on Mr. Van. The surgery revealed that he had broken seven ribs and suffered from hemothorax. The procedure involved making a long incision in the chest to remove adhesions, fluid, and blood clots while rearranging and fixing the displaced broken ribs.

Following the surgery, Mr. Van experienced no pain and his lungs expanded well without any signs of infection. After five days of recovery, he was discharged from the hospital with no complications whatsoever. Chest injuries such as rib fractures are common after accidents but can lead to serious complications if not addressed promptly by medical professionals.

It is crucial for patients with chest injuries to seek immediate medical attention and closely monitor their symptoms for any abnormalities or worsening conditions. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly improve outcomes and prevent further complications that may arise due to delayed care or lack of proper attention.

In conclusion, Mr. Van’s case serves as an example of how severe chest injuries can have significant impacts on one’s health if left untreated promptly by medical professionals with expertise in cardiovascular thoracic surgery or other relevant fields of medicine.

Furthermore, it highlights the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when experiencing symptoms related to chest injuries like rib fractures or pleural effusion since they can be life-threatening if left untreated for an extended period.
