IOCL Chooses Lummus’ Cumene Technology for New Project

IndianOil Corp. Ltd. (IOCL) has recently chosen Lummus Technology’s cumene technology for a new unit in Paradip, India. This selection marks the second recent cumene license in India for Lummus and strengthens their relationship with IOCL. The new cumene unit is part of a petrochemical and polymers expansion project at IndianOil’s complex in Paradip.

Lummus’ cumene technology will provide IOCL with lower energy costs, operational efficiency, and exceptional product yield, helping them optimize their plant economics and support their growth initiatives. Romain Lemoine, Chief Business Officer for Polymers and Petrochemicals at Lummus Technology, expressed excitement about continuing to work with IOCL on this successful project and further building on their long-time relationship.

Lummus’ scope of work for this project includes the technology license for the cumene technology, basic design engineering, proprietary catalyst, site services, advisory services, and training. IOCL has previously licensed multiple technologies from Lummus for complexes across India, including naphtha cracker, INDMAX FCC, and polypropylene technologies.

Lummus and Versalis have been partners in licensing cumene technologies since 2007. The cumene process is a liquid-phase alkylation technology that utilizes a proprietary zeolite catalyst, resulting in high cumene yield, ultra-high purity cumene product, and a long catalyst run length.
