Lufthansa introduces a new offer for ITA to the European Union with final decision to be made on July 4th

Lufthansa’s recent offer to acquire 41% of Ita has been met with concerns by the European Commission, who have postponed their final decision on the sale until July 4th. The Commission has raised concerns over short and long-haul flights as well as concentration at Milan Linate airport. Lufthansa owns several airlines including Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Swiss, and Eurowings. Low-cost carriers Ryanair and EasyJet are interested in potential slot transfers at Fiumicino and Linate airports.

The CEO of Lufthansa, Carsten Spohr, is optimistic about the merger between Ita and his company. He highlights the benefits for consumers, Ita, Lufthansa and increased competition in the Italian market. On the other hand, Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary sees it as a necessary step for Ita’s sustainability. The Vice President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager warns that serious competition problems must be resolved before approving the transaction.

Ita’s president Antonino Turicchi believes they have addressed the Commission’s concerns and are hopeful for approval.
