Schoolboys make incredible discovery while exploring: find bone of elephant that lived millions of years ago

Two young boys made a rare discovery in Germany when they stumbled upon the bones of a prehistoric elephant underground. The bones, which are estimated to be about 10 million years old, belong to the long-tusked Deinotherium elephant, a distant relative of modern elephants. These bones have been put on display at a museum in Taufkirchen, south of Munich, as part of their collections that include objects from prehistoric times.

Researchers believe that the bones found last year belonged to Deinotherium elephants that lived in Germany outside of Munich. The discovery was made by two brothers, aged 10 and 9, who first found one bone while digging during the daylight hours. To their surprise, the bone survived an unexpected blow from a boulder that fell on it during excavations near the small Bavarian village of Weipersdorf. Further excavations led to the discovery of a total of 120 bones, some of which were badly damaged.

Deinotherium lived during the Miocene period in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The largest specimens weighed up to 12 tons and stood up to four meters tall. Deinotherium had long tusks and teeth suited for eating forest foods such as leaves and shoots. However, it did not adapt well to changing climates during the ice ages and became extinct without leaving any descendants behind.
