Gavin McKenna’s hat trick leads Canada to fifth U18 world hockey gold

Canada emerged victorious in the under-18 men’s world hockey championship, winning its fifth title in the tournament. The key to their success was the outstanding play of Gavin McKenna, who led the way with three goals, including an empty-netter, and one assist.

McKenna, a 16-year-old forward from Whitehorse, Yukon, praised his teammates for their strong play throughout the tournament. He highlighted their camaraderie and friendship as crucial factors in their success. There was never any doubt in the locker room, he said.

Cole Beaudoin and Tij Iginla also contributed goals in the third period as Canada rallied from an early 3-1 deficit. Ryder Ritchie added a goal in the second period, while Carter George made 31 saves to secure the win for Canada. On the other hand, Cole Hutson had a goal and two assists for the United States, but penalties proved costly as they racked up 31 penalty minutes compared to Canada’s eight.

In the bronze medal game, Sweden defeated Slovakia 4-0 behind goaltender Love Harenstam’s 36-save shutout. Lucas Pettersson broke the scoreless tie in the third period with a goal that sealed victory for Sweden. Alan Lendak made 25 saves for Slovakia in a losing effort.
