Students from Wyoming compete at National Science Bowl in Washington, DC

In March, Wyoming’s Kelly Walsh High School and CY Middle School teams participated in the 34th National Science Bowl Championship held in Washington. This marked the fifth consecutive year that KW High School won first place as the Wyoming Regional High School Science Bowl champion. The Natrona County school district mentioned that part of the fun was learning how to quickly respond to questions and using strategic critical thinking skills to avoid making mistakes on the spot.

KW Science Club holds mock science bowls throughout the year to prepare for competitions, which is just one of many STEM activities offered by the school. Additionally, CY Middle School students are part of its STEM Club, which explores advanced scientific knowledge and competes in Science Olympiad competitions every year.

Out of 115 regional high school and middle school teams from January to March, only 67 high schools and 48 middle school teams made it to the finals. Unfortunately, Casper’s teams were eliminated before reaching the finals. However, this did not dampen spirits as Dr. Harriet Kung, Acting Director of Energy Office of Science expressed excitement at the start of the National Finals, noting that it brings together some of the brightest young minds in America and showcases their future in science and innovation.

The top two middle and high school teams will earn $5,000 each for their schools’ math and science departments while other schools placing in the top 16 will receive $1,000 for their departments.
