Black Maternal Health Week: Doula Latham Thomas works towards reducing the crisis of maternal mortality

In the United States, the maternal mortality crisis continues to be a major concern during Black Maternal Health Week. According to recent data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there were 51 pregnancy-related deaths in 2020. Of those deaths, 23 were Black women, 13 were Latina, 6 were Asian, and 8 were white. These stark racial disparities are cause for alarm.

However, there are individuals working to transform the maternal healthcare landscape for people of color. One such individual is Latham Thomas, a doula and founder of Mama Glow, a global maternal health and education platform. Thomas is dedicated to providing a safer path to pregnancy for women of color through her work and goals in addressing maternal health disparities.

In a recent conversation with Thomas, she shared her insights on the importance of addressing these issues in order to improve outcomes for pregnant women of color. Shirleen Allicot also reported on maternal health disparities, highlighting the need to address these issues in order to create a more equitable healthcare system for all women.

As we continue to raise awareness during Black Maternal Health Week, it is important to support initiatives and individuals working towards this goal. We must prioritize maternal health and advocate for change in order to create a more equitable healthcare system for all women.
