New Approach to Tackling Famine in Gaza: Feeding Animals to Feed People

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to a dire situation for the population, with many people relying on canned food for survival. According to Samir Zaqut, deputy director of the Palestinian NGO Al Mezan, the war has had devastating effects on livestock and agriculture, resulting in food insecurity and malnutrition.

To address this urgent need for food, the FAO has introduced barley fodder to support local livestock and food production. This initiative aims to provide fresh and nutritious food like milk and meat to the population. Despite challenges in obtaining permits and security risks, the FAO remains determined to continue the distribution of fodder in Gaza.

The FAO emphasizes the importance of combating hunger and malnutrition by ensuring access to a variety of foods, not just bread. The organization’s goal is to prevent famine and promote a balanced diet for the people of Gaza. Many families are resorting to wild herbs or animal feed to alleviate hunger due to limited access to essential items like clean water and cooking gas.

International aid organizations are working tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of the population by providing them with necessary support during these challenging times. However, without a ceasefire, it is difficult to sustain food distribution and agricultural support due to ongoing conflict in Gaza that hinders humanitarian aid delivery.
