Marta’s Psychiatric Disorder: Little Reindeer and Treatment Options

The popular Netflix series, currently number 2 on the viewing list in Israel, is a dramatic-comedy thriller starring comedian Richard Gad. Gad not only stars in the show but also wrote it, basing it on events from his own life, including a stalker who sexually harassed him. The series follows the life of Gad, known as “Donnie” in the show, in London in 2015. He works in a pub after failing at stand-up comedy.

The success of the series has led psychologists to analyze the character of Martha, played by actress Sarah Niles. Marta poses as a lawyer but is later revealed to be a stalker who makes Donnie’s life miserable. Viewers are taken on a psychological journey to uncover Marta’s obsession and Donnie’s role in fueling her madness throughout the seven episodes.

Psychologists have analyzed Marta’s behavior and believe she may suffer from erotomania and borderline personality disorder. Erotomania is a delusional disorder where a person believes someone, usually of higher status, loves them despite evidence to the contrary. In the series, Marta persists in believing in a romantic relationship with Donnie. She also exhibits signs of borderline personality disorder characterized by extreme swings between admiration and hostility, typical of the disorder.

Borderline personality disorder often results from abandonment in childhood or adolescence, leading to extreme emotional fluctuations like those exhibited by Marta. Borderline personality disorder, especially combined with erotomania, can be challenging to treat. The disorder typically affects women and is challenging for psychologists due to extreme emotional outbursts.

Donnie’s behavior can be attributed to his own traumas, leading him to sympathize with Marta’s extreme actions. He shows signs of Stockholm Syndrome, forming a bond with his abuser, which is common in abuse victims.

This week, “real” Martha made headlines threatening legal action against Netflix for portraying her as heavy and dangerous in the series. She claims to be a talented lawyer misrepresented in the show, leading to public backlash. However, her actions have sparked discussions about mental health and the effects of trauma on individuals and society as a whole.

The series sheds light on complex psychological themes and human behavior while highlighting important issues such as mental health awareness and victimization support systems.

Overall, this article highlights how fictional storytelling can inspire real-life conversations about mental health issues while also providing insight into how real-life experiences can shape fictional narratives.
