Shouldn’t a professional business require employees to hide tattoos?

My granddaughter is a 27-year-old who believes that most people her age have tattoos and don’t cover them up at work. She wonders if this is the new norm, as she thought legitimate businesses required employees to cover up their tattoos. Miss Manners believes that if the tattoos are not offensive and the employers are okay with them, there is no need to get involved. She suggests thinking of tattoos as a way to see that this generation loves their mothers and butterflies.

On the other hand, another reader seeks advice on how to respond when unfamiliar men approach her in public and ask about her height. These men often make assumptions about her height without waiting for her answer. Miss Manners suggests responding with humor by saying something like, “5-foot-10, you say? Weird. So am I.”
