Dresden’s Impact on the Start of the EU Election Campaign in Berlin

The European Social Democrats (SPD) have launched the hot phase of their campaign for the upcoming European election on June 9th. Key figures from the European social democracy family gathered in the Bolle Halls in Berlin-Moabit to convey the central message of the party: a firm stance against a shift to the right and against extreme right-wing groups.

The recent attack on SPD European politician Matthias Ecke in Dresden has brought the threat of extremism to sharp focus. Kevin Kühnert, visibly shaken, shared news that Ecke sustained fractures in his face and will need an operation. Kühnert expressed concern over the increasing number of attacks on campaign workers in recent weeks.

The incident in Dresden has added urgency to the meeting in Berlin, with a collective determination to stand against right-wing extremist parties that currently hold seats in European parliaments and governments. The SPD views these parties as a threat to the European project, citing their restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms.

In response to this threat, the European Social Democrats have issued a “Berlin Declaration of Democracy.” The party firmly rejects any possibility of forming coalitions with right-wing extremist parties in the European Parliament. Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that standing united against such threats is crucial for maintaining democratic values and protecting fundamental rights and freedoms across Europe.

The attack on Matthias Ecke underscores the need for a strong stance against extremism. SPD leader Saskia Esken expressed shock at the incident and offered support to Ecke. The party remains committed to maintaining a solid firewall against extremist ideologies and ensuring that democratic values are protected throughout Europe.

Overall, this election campaign will be critical for defending democracy from far-right threats, and it’s important for everyone who values freedom, equality, and justice to stand together with us in our fight for a better future for all Europeans.
