Voting in elections by mobile phone will be permitted in Estonia

The proposed law on electronic voting will now allow citizens to vote through special applications on mobile devices, in addition to computers. This change reflects the shift in citizens’ behavior towards smart devices and aims to make e-government more accessible. However, this new feature will not come into effect until October, meaning it cannot be used in the upcoming elections for the European Parliament in June.

Estonia has been at the forefront of digital innovation in Europe, introducing online voting in 2005 and becoming known as a pioneer in e-governance. Over half of all votes in the March 2023 parliamentary elections were cast digitally, showcasing Estonia’s commitment to digitization and its success with online voting. Despite concerns about reliability, Estonia has embraced digitization and offers its citizens the convenience of conducting almost all transactions online in their daily lives.
