Metro Health inspectors ensure Fiesta food vendors adhere to safety regulations

Fiesta has returned to San Antonio, bringing excitement and joy to the city. People are eager to indulge in the delicious food and drinks that Fiesta offers. However, it is essential to prioritize food safety while enjoying these festivities. A KSAT crew recently accompanied San Antonio Metropolitan Health District inspectors to observe how they ensure food safety during Fiesta.

Deborah Liu, a Metro Health environmental health officer, emphasized that consuming unsafe food can have severe consequences. Sometimes, food may not be cooked correctly, leading to foodborne illnesses that may not manifest until the next day. This is why it is crucial for inspectors to continuously monitor vendors at every Fiesta event.

Inspectors examine various aspects of food safety, including ensuring that food is at the correct temperature, that vendors follow proper sanitation practices, and that they have appropriate protective gear such as gloves, hats or hairnets. If a vendor violates food safety regulations, they are given an opportunity to rectify the issue; otherwise, they could lose their permit and be shut down.

If anyone attending Fiesta notices anything concerning regarding food safety, they should call 311 immediately and report it. By being vigilant and prioritizing food safety, everyone can enjoy Fiesta festivities without the risk of getting sick.
