Disney grants conservation funding to unique school focusing on science and preservation

Located in the foothills of Tulare County, CA, the Outdoor School of Science and Conservation (SCICON) is a magical place that educates fifth and sixth graders on the importance of science and conservation. The school, operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, welcomes over 8,000 students each year to its 1,170-acre campus.

SCICON offers a unique learning experience where students can hike through nature trails, learn about aquatic life in local waterways, and explore a museum featuring local items and animals. The school’s director, Dianne Shew, describes it as an opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of their impact on the environment and instill a sense of responsibility for protecting it for future generations.

In early 2023, SCICON was heavily damaged by historic flooding that affected the habitat of native salamanders. However, with the support of community efforts and organizations like Friends of SCICON and Disney “VoluntEARS,” restoration efforts are underway to restore the salamander habitat. This grant will not only help to restore the habitat but also educate students on the importance of environmental conservation.

Shew believes that by inspiring each child who visits SCICON to take action and spread the message of conservation, great strides can be made in protecting the Earth. With their continued efforts, SCICON empowers students to make a positive impact on planet earth.
