Laredo Police Chief stresses importance of mental health awareness in response to increasing suicide rates

In a proclamation recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month in Laredo, Texas, Chief of Police Miguel Rodriguez urged the community to have open conversations about mental health. Patricia Limas, a survivor of emotional abuse who spoke at the event, emphasized the importance of addressing mental health challenges.

Limas shared her story of enduring emotional abuse for fourteen years and the emptiness and pain she felt during that time. After breaking free from the abusive relationship, Limas has focused on her mental health journey not just for herself but also for her daughter. She stressed the significance of open conversations about mental health and expressed support for local recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting the rising suicide rates in the city. He pointed out that many of these suicides have been committed by a young demographic, raising concerns about issues such as bullying, cyber-bullying, and domestic violence. Limas emphasized the importance of teaching her daughter about mental health and resilience in light of these challenges.

Support services, including the 988 hotline staffed by medical professionals, are available for individuals facing mental health struggles.
