Valley Times-News highlights standout student from J.P. Powell at regional science fair

Tyler Broussard, an eighth grader at Eastside John P. Powell Magnet School, has achieved great success in the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GREASF). She won third place in the competition held on February 23, 2024. As a result of her achievement, Tyler qualified for the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) where she competed in the junior division for middle schoolers in grades 6th-8th.

Tyler’s project, titled “Lights On” under the category of Robotics and Intelligent Machines, caught the attention of judges. At ASEF, Tyler was recognized with the Broadcom Award for Coding with Commitment. She received a $250 gift card and a Raspberry Pi kit as a reward for her achievement. This accomplishment led to her nomination among the top 10% of participants from ASEF, and now she is competing in the Broadcom Masters 2024 competition against approximately 300 other students for entry.

Throughout her journey, Tyler has been receiving guidance from Dr. Vickie Benson, who serves as both her Physical Science teacher and K-8 STEAM Specialist at East John P. Powell Magnet School. Dr. Benson has played an instrumental role in helping Tyler hone her skills and succeed in competitive science fairs circuit.

Tyler’s success at GREASF and ASEF demonstrates how important it is to pursue one’s interests and passions, even when faced with challenges along the way. Her dedication to learning about robotics and intelligent machines has led her to achieve great things and earn recognition from experts in the field.

As she moves forward into Broadcom Masters competition, Tyler will continue to work hard towards achieving more successes in this exciting field of study.
