Over 560 people poisoned after consuming bread in Vietnam

On April 30, a store in Xuan Binh ward sold bread that was later found to be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, causing 560 people to be hospitalized due to poisoning. Of those, 200 have been discharged from the hospital and 119 are being monitored for treatment at home. However, 12 severe cases remain in the hospital. The number of hospitalizations has decreased after increasing continuously in recent days.

The most severe case is a 6-year-old boy who is still in a deep coma at Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City with little urine and continues to require a ventilator and dialysis. The second serious case is a 7-year-old child being treated at Dong Nai Children’s Hospital whose health is improving. The remaining severe cases are temporarily stable. The case file has been transferred to the police investigation agency for processing.

Dr. Le Quang Trung, Director of Dong Nai Department of Health, announced that three seriously ill pediatric patients were infected with E. coli bacteria and experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating bread sold at the store in Xuan Binh ward on April 30. The shop has since stopped operating and food samples collected from the bakery are being tested. An interdisciplinary inspection team sealed the freezer at the facility which contained various food items purchased from small retail stores and processed by the shop without a sales contract.
